Dr. Simon A. Carn received a BA in Earth Science from Oxford University, UK, in 1993, and a DEA (the French equivalent of an MS) in Volcanology from l' Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 1994. His DEA research involved analysis of radioactive disequilibria in volcanic rocks from Lanzarote, Canary Islands. He received his PhD in 1999 from the University of Cambridge, UK, where he worked on volcanism in the Indonesian archipelago. In 2000 he joined the Montserrat Volcano Observatory on the island of Montserrat, West Indies, where he was responsible for monitoring fluxes of volcanic gas (SO2 and HCl) from the Soufrière Hills volcano, which began its first historical eruption in 1995 and continues to erupt in 2002. Dr. Carn's research interests include remote sensing of volcanic emissions and volcanic activity using ground-based, airborne and space-borne sensors, development of new instruments for monitoring volcanic gases, and establishing links between volcanic emissions, solid earth and magmatic processes and eruption prediction. He joined the TOMS Volcanic Emissions Team at UMBC/NASA GSFC in 2001.
